As a data scientist, it's easy to only pay attention to the numbers: how accurate is the model? How good is the algorithm? Are we meeting KPIs? I believe that data science is a human endavour, where how people interpret data is as important as the data itself. My areas of expertise are on how organizations use data to make decisions, and how data science teams organize and work together to produce insights.
When I work with companies, I first try to understand the problem at hand, and if using data science is even the right approach. I then provide an exploratory analysis of the data to find its key features. From there I create machine learning models and recommendations on the business approach.
My primary technology choice is R, however I am comfortable in other environments, including Python, SQL, and .NET.
In my free time I enjoy hanging out with my wife Heather and son Amber. I am the winner of season 3 of the reality TV show "King of the Nerds." As a hobby I enjoy mixing technology and humor, leading to the creation of things like TweetMashup.com and AI generated license plates.
I currently am a Principal at Nolis, LLC, a consulting firm started by Heather Nolis and myself.
I was a Lead of Advanced Analytics at Promontory Growth and Innovation. The team I lead used data science to help large companies find areas to reduce costs and improve efficiency.
I was on the marketing team at Boeing Commercial Airplanes, where I used data and mathematical models to guide the market forecast.
I was a data scientist at Vistaprint. There I created statistical models to determine when sales were unusually low and alert the appropriate people.
